CIOs don't know what they don't know

Most CIOs were very slow to grasp the importance of virtualization and cloud, and are just beginning to catch on.

Cloud, semantic Web, big data, context driven architecture... these and others are not incremental, not small changes to best practices -- are we entering a period that can best be characterized by a lack of comprehension of big changes, leading to poor readiness for and use of these emerging technologies and IT strategies?

Is it because there are too many CIOs with business backgrounds rather than technology backgrounds?

LOB executives are better at grasping the potential than CIOs. Going around CIOs works better than convincing CIOs to champion a new technology.
